Explorer Post 45 offers young people (ages 14-21) an opportunity to not only learn about law enforcement, but also serve their community. Explorers participate in many community related events such as the annual July 4th fireworks, and fingerprints children, as well as direct traffic at community events.

In addition to community service, explorers are trained in various techniques used by law enforcement professionals. Some of the areas explorers are trained in are traffic stops, and building searches. Post 45 travels to regional events to compete against other explorer posts in various scenarios. Explorers learn a great amount of what police officers need to know to fulfill their duties.

Police explorers learn a great deal about the Greenwich Police Department. Explorers are familiar with police radio procedures, patrol areas, vehicles,  equipment, and methods of patrol. Through the department's ride along program, explorers get to ride with a patrol officer and experience life through the eyes of an officer.

There are some objectives for the Explorer Program:

  • To provide positive teenage activities through community involvement
  • To supply a reserve pool of individuals for emergencies or for community service
  • To provide elementary law enforcement training
  • To create the potential for young people to learn responsibility and leadership skills
  • To give Explorers the experience necessary for them to make an educated decision as to whether law enforcement is the future for them
  • To promote a spirit of cooperation through personal growth and group development

The Law Enforcement Explorer Program of Greenwich is sponsored by the Greenwich Police Silver Shield Association. Law Enforcment Exploring is part of the Boy Scouts of America.
